“Oh, the head’s come off. “
“Are you going to put it back?”
“No, I like tearing things apart.”
“Disassembly.”
“Yeah!”
“Deconstruction.”
“Not destruction.”
“Not destruction – deconstruction.”
“De-cotchking-struction? [Later] I don’t need decotchkingstruction. I need instruction.”

A Vinyl Education, Part One

June 12, 2014

Image

Rowan lasted a side of George Harrison’s triple-album All Things Must Pass, Comment on My Sweet Lord: “That was good fun.” Similarly one side of the Beach Boys’ Endless Summer was sufficient, but after a single Jackson 5 number (I Want You Back) she requested more Jimi Hendrix. One endearing thing is that she always wants to know what the song is…

To begin with: Hendrix a massive, massive hit, beginning with the Axis: Bold as Love vertical gatefold and, thanks to my purchase of the entire late 90s double-heavy-vinyl reissues, we then take it right through from Are You Experienced? to First Rays of the Rising Sun and Stone Saturn Delta, and forevermore.

Except that she’s now moved on to Marvin Gaye – Here My Dear is a surprise hit. Currently midway through Side Three, the: When Did You Stop Loving Me, When Did I Stop Loving You instrumental reprise.

“Can we watch another?”

ps. The record cabinet was open shelves but the cats scratched the record spines – two thirds of the lower shelf are ruined. But, hey, these are the records I have to play, not to sell. The doors have a circle of blackboard paint in the middle. I drew the chalk spiral and Rowan drew the rest.

“Very good.”

“And hundreds and hundreds of woods.”

“Do you mean trees?”

“Yeah, and hundreds and hundreds of animals in houses. And hundreds and hundreds of halls. And hundreds and hundreds of stars in the night sky. And hundreds and hundreds of buses. And hundreds and hundreds of moons.”

“I thought there was just one moon.”

“No, silly! There are hundreds and hundreds.”

Growth spurts (23/4/14)

April 23, 2014

So much has happened since the start of the year, the move and Rowan starting at preschool – she’s come along in leaps and bounds, especially in terms of language. Yet when I write down the remarkable things she has said, they  look deeply unremarkable. And maybe that’s the point. The more articulate kids become, the less we notice it, because the more ‘normal’ they are. With that in mind, here is what I’ve noted down in my little purple book this year so far…

26/2/14: I notice her asking ‘Why’ for the first time.

5/3/14: “Daddy? I’ve got a problem. Want to move cushion.”’

11/3/14: “Put some sauce on it. Put some ingredients.”

And here are some lines I really love to hear at the moment:

“Where are you going now , Daddy?” and “It’s not working.”

25/3/14: “That was a big wee… That was ten wees!”

2/4/14: “Are you tired?”  “No, I’m brave.”

“Are you screwing it?” (Watching me eat spaghetti). “Yes, I suppose so. Do you want me to do yours?” “No, I just eating it.”

20/4/14: “I just collecting Easters!”

(It’s also notable that she’s just as happy to look when she hides the Easter eggs herself…)

More lines I love to hear at the moment:

“I just want you to play, Daddy!” and, of the mobile phone: “Stop that! Put it in your pocket!”

Here are some things that Rowan currently thinks are ‘Too nice’:

–          Plums

–          Good ham

–          Her Easter hat

Finally, some recent creations:
